Warrenpoint Town’s achievement in making it through to the Premier Division of the Irish League has been described as proving that sporting fairy tales do come through.
And Councillor Connaire McGreevy said that as well as having a full Newry and Mourne Civic Reception for the players and management he will be seeking cross party support from the Assembly to ensure that a Stormont reception will also be provided.
“The battling spirit they showed over two legs against Donegal Celtic was truly remarkable and made a mockery of the odds that were being quoted against them.
“As a community we need to show our complete support for the club. Warrenpoint Town has delivered a huge goodwill factor for all of us who enjoy sport.
“The least that we can do as public representatives is to acknowledge that factor. We have to put on record our sincere thanks for what they have brought to so many people.
“This is the shot in the arm that local football needs, especially after the difficulties endured over the last couple of seasons with the financial problems of Newry City.
“The fact that in just over four years Warrenpoint Town has been able to move up from the Mid Ulster league through the highest ranks of local soccer is an incredible story.
“The club has given the entire area a huge boost. It is a marvellous example of how, against all the odds, a sports organisation with the proper leadership on and off the field can translate a vision into a concrete reality.
“Warrenpoint Town is going to bring a much needed fresh splash of colour and enthusiasm to the Irish League next season.
“Their rise has been one built on taking solid steps forward every season.
“Certainly from the perspective of Newry and Mourne Council representatives it will be our responsibility to ensure that every type of support, both financial and otherwise, is provided to ensure that the fairy tale continues,” Councillor McGreevy added.
